Sunday Photography No. 10

As I was washing dinner dishes the other night, I spotted two of the sweetest, smallest white flowers outside my kitchen window. Spring has been popping up quietly all over Charleston. I see paper whites as I’m stopped at a stop sign around the corner. And there are tulip trees blooming! But these Lilly of the Valley (at least that’s what I think they are) are the first signs of Spring in my yard.

I quickly dried my hands and grabbed my camera and opened the door outside before responsibility could get in the way of creative impulse. And I’m glad I did.

Weekly Photograph | Signs of Spring

Spring comes early to Charleston. Our daffodils bloomed months ago, it seems. But I don’t think it’s really Spring until the jasmine blooms. We moved into our house in October, so I didn’t know it at the time since the whole backyard is something of a mish-mash of green (hence the May makeover), but the vine growing up the side of our detached garage is jasmine. When it bloomed the next spring, I was over joyed. It’s so simply beautiful, and it smells so sweetly good. I look forward to the blooming every year, and of course I assume the entire neighborhood does too. “The jasmine is budding,” I tell Jason. “I bet it will bloom this week.” “Oh! Look at the jasmine.” He feigns excitement, but he’s not quite as enthusiastic as I am, so I’ll share with you. This is jasmine growing in my back yard! I think it’s the very best sign of Spring and fits this week’s Focus 52 prompt.

Day 17: Benefit for Dragon Boat of Charleston (A Post in PIctures)

Today was such a beautiful day, the perfect day, in fact, to celebrate Spring and help Dragon Boat of Charleston. We went to the Spring Kickoff Festival at Freshfields Village on Johns Island. We petted an alligator, had our faces painted, had a picnic lunch, danced, hula hooped, and supported Dragon Boat Charleston, which promotes “physical and mental wellness among cancer survivors and their community through dragon boating.”

(And there were dragon boat demonstrations and an opportunity to paddle around the lake at Freshfields, but I didn’t think it would be responsible to leave the kids in the stroller on the shore while I paddled away.)
