Be Outside Day 30 | Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned 1 Be Outside Day 30 | Lessons Learned

A funny thing happens when you make an effort to Be Outside as much as possible. I don’t quite know how to explain it, but it’s almost like waking up from a really long nap. The sun hits your face, and you can stretch. Blood rushes back into limbs. Muscles flex. And the world around you sparkles a little brighter, like the sunlight is calling you. This is how I’ve been feeling this month, and it’s a lovely feeling. Here are some of my lessons learned.

  • I need to be outside. Really. I thought I was doing okay in filtered air with fluorescent lighting. Not so much. My body and mind need to be outside for peace of mind and good health. I’m convinced the smell of fresh cut grass is good for me.
  • There’s so much to do. I know. I know. Of course there is. But before I might’ve worried, well, I don’t really know what I was worried about. But now I’m ready for our next big adventure. I carry a change of clothes in the car for the kids. We’re off to what’s new and next and as long as it outside we’re happy.
  • And there’s so much more to try. I want to go fishing and ride a boat around Charleston Harbor (the water taxi, if I get desperate). I want to water the flowers in the public gardens for the Charleston Parks Conservancy (I tried to do this during these 30 days, but I was rained out). My awesome friend Jessica suggested an alligator walk or crab catching too. And I want to take lots more photos and remember every second.
  • Nothing wears my kids out quite like a day outside. It doesn’t really seem to matter what we do, my kids come home tired. They’ve been taking some truly wonderful naps this month. Some days, nothing could make me happier.
  • The smallest challenges can have the biggest effects. This one wasn’t anything profound or difficult. And it was super easy to accomplish. But I feel refreshed and happy and ready to face a new day. In my mind, that’s 30 Days well spent.

What have you learned this month?

Be Outside Day 28 | The Myrtle Beach Sky Wheel

Myrtle Beach Sky Wheel 1.5 Be Outside Day 28 | The Myrtle Beach Sky Wheel

When you make it your mission to Be Outside, you start to look for goings on that might put you a little outside your comfort zone. Not that I’m bored with my backyard sitting or hanging on the beach, but sometimes you just want to do something that will make your heart beat a little faster. Last weekend Jason and I escaped to Myrtle Beach to celebrate our 10th anniversary. From our hotel room, we could clearly see the Sky Wheel. While heights aren’t my very favorite things, I knew I wanted the view from the top, and I wanted to ride the Sky Wheel. Jason humored my adventurous spirit, and we bought tickets.

I felt very small standing on the deck beneath the Sky Wheel. The organized workings of a Ferris wheel are hypnotic and amazing. Wires connect to cables connected to pipes that all spin slowly around. The metal ladders cast moving shadows. And the whole thing twirled silently past.

The first time around rattled my nerves a bit. It was a trust thing, I think. That I was trusting this tangle of steel to keep me safe. But more it was also an OMG-I’m-up-so-high-and-this-cart-I’m-in swings thing. The Sky Wheel gives views of the Grand Strand, all kinds of beach hotels, the Boardwalk, and the beach. Honestly, I could probably see all the way to China from the top of that thing.

Bird’s eye view, right? We spun over the ocean and Myrtle Beach for 20 or so minutes, stopping occasionally to let someone off or pick up new passengers. As our car went around, the skies got bluer and the sun came out. I love moments like those. It’s when you realize how awesome right now is. How totally perfect the second that you’re experiencing is. That feeling, right then, is the feeling of being really alive.

The Days No. 3

USE ME The Days 3 The Days No. 3

The Days of this week I’ve been swimming, beaching, relaxing, celebrating, rainbow spotting, and looking for solace in my back yard. | Day 16 Pool-TASTIC morning here. Happy Father’s Day to all the daddies out there!! | Day 17 Sitting at Starbucks, and I might be facing a busy street, but I’m still working outside. #cantbeatthat | Day 18 We had a brutal #thunderstorm last night. I love the delicate reminders that remain the next morning. | Day 19 Laying in the grass to escape the crazy inside. #muchneededbreak | Day 20 Out and about on Broad Street, downtown Charleston. | Day 21 Relaxing on the hotel balcony. #HappyAnniversary to me and mine. | Day 22 Walk on the pier and a day at the beach. #vacation

And I saw two (two!) separate rainbows outside on Day 21, which was also my 10th anniversary. Of course my husband and I are taking them as a sign that nature was celebrating too. The rainbow, natures bunting.
