Be Outside Day 1

06/01/13

Day One of my 30 Days to Be Outside

So a couple of weeks ago my husband looked at me over dinner and said, “You don’t go outside much.” We were talking about the beach or working in the yard or parking in the garage instead of the driveway. I don’t know, and it really doesn’t matter what the conversation was about. Because this was the important part. I thought about it some. And then I realized that he’s right. Call it carry-over from the winter or maybe being too closely connected to my work and computer, but lately I’ve been lacking in my time in the sunshine, my time to just be outside.

The weather right now in Charleston is full-on gorgeous. I live minutes from the beach. My city has so many amazing parks that offer green space. Even my backyard is lovely and lush and perfect for sitting in the shade. I don’t know why I’ve been neglecting mother nature, but my time under my ceiling is about to stop. Right here. Right now.

For the next 30 days, I am going to be outside as much as I possibly can. I’ll be outside with my morning coffee. With my umbrella in the rain. With my kids for play time. With myself for beach time. I want to be outside when the sun’s shining or it’s raining or the wind’s blowing or whatever. I plan to be outside to soak up what nature has to offer and to maybe give back to a little nature myself.

The important thing this month is to have the open sky over head and the grass between my toes. If you need me, I’ll be outside.

Wow, I love this one. I may have to join you. In fact, when the kiddo asked to kick the ball during yesterday’s amazingly gorgeous afternoon, I said yet without hesitation. Going to have to keep that up.

It’s the PERFECT time to be outside, isn’t it. And my kids are just loving the extra sunshine too. I don’t know why my outside time is the first to disappear when things get busy. I always feel better because of it. I’d love to hear how you’re spending your outside time, Jacki!

[…] As I write, Tropical Storm Andrea is almost right over me. All night long I could hear the rain pouring, the wind knocking branches against my roof. I even dreamed about the beach’s tall, stormy waves and sideways rain that a tropical storm can bring. The trees outside my window now are bending, and the news is talking about gusts up to 50 miles per hour. And last night I was grumpy, kind of complain-y that the warnings and flash flooding might keep me inside, would stop me and my efforts to Be Outside. […]
