No Sugar Day 10 | The Weird Withdrawal Symptoms

Sugar-Withdrawal-Side-Effects

I get it. Sugar is addicting, like drugs. So when you quit sugar you get withdrawal symptoms. I feel ya. Trust me. I expected the tiredness and the grumpy. I expected to be hungry and have headaches. But can we talk about what I didn’t expect?

Like, I didn’t expect that my taste buds would revolt. That most everything I put in my mouth would taste like it’s been stored in a rusted out soda can. Appetizing, right? Water and coffee aren’t so tainted, but the rest of food totally is. And when I don’t have anything in my mouth, even my tongue tastes like it’s been licking batteries. I’ve been brushing my teeth like a mad woman. My dentist approves, for sure, but I’m not so impressed.

Also, I wish I could sleep. Scratch that. I wish I could sleep well. And we know that sleeping isn’t exactly one of my talents, but I am in bed where it’s cool and comfortable. And I do fall asleep, but something shifts in the middle of the night and I am tossing and turning and dreaming and genuinely not doing a good job resting. Plus when I wake up it’s clear I’ve been battling something big because my body just hurts.

Sometimes my hands shake. Like out of nowhere I notice this slight tremor and buzz through my fingers. And while it usually passes, I figure it’s because I need to eat, like my blood sugar is low, or something. It’s still annoying.

And not to get too personal, but I started my period waaaaaaaaaay early. And I’m not the kind of girl who has calendar-perfect, timed cycles, but I have never ever started a period 3 weeks early. I blame the sudden shift in diet throwing my entire body for a loop.

Whaa Whaa. I know. Poor me. But isn’t it strange that something like sugar can affect your body in ways you wouldn’t even expect. Like even my uterus was addicted to sugar. And I am thankful to never have to work through an addition to something like cocaine or nicotine, even. I don’t know that I’d make it. And right now, I’m really looking forward to having my taste buds back.

Have you ever gone through withdrawal? What were your worst symptoms?

Oh my goodness! I hope that things start to even out soon and you feel better. Giving up sugar can be rough… so at the end of the 30 days will you start to eat it again?

Thanks Jackie! I think I’m over the worst of it now. When these 30 Days are all done, I want to start back on some healthier kinds of sugar, like fruit, in a moderated kind of way. I don’t ever want to be where I was before.
