I’ve been thinking of this quote by Proust quite a lot lately. It might be the new year weighing on me. Or maybe it’s this desire to change something to do something to be something that I’ve been feeling lately. But this quote is hitting home right now.
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
Beautiful, right? This is the thought that you don’t have to move or change the world around you, but you do have to change the way you look at the world. You have to open your eyes and refocus. See everything in a new and different and beautiful way. With new eyes the world is refreshed and cleansed. And with new eyes what once might have been old is different and somehow more special than it ever was before. This is discovery from your desk chair, your couch, your bed. The world is available for discovery without even opening the front door. It’s amazing to realize that discovery begins with yourself.
So I’m not wishing for rose-colored glasses. Instead, I’m trying to renew my own eyes.
