South Carolina Aquarium

06/03/12

I love the South Carolina Aquarium for so many reasons.

It’s clear that families, and especially children, are a priority when it comes to the exhibits and facilities. Taking my children there means I don’t have to lift them up to see and animals or fish (or even at the bathroom sinks), and it means they can be involved and hands-on kind of way, which makes it even more fun for them. This even includes children as young as mine. When you go, the Great Ocean Tank is not to be missed, and the daily SCUBA diver show is a great opportunity to get to know what swims on the other side of the glass. There are fish, sharks, and Caretta the sea turtle. Upstairs our favorites are the albino alligator, sea otters, and the touch tank. It’s not a huge aquarium, but it offers something everyone will be fascinated by.

As if the sea life wasn’t enough, the aquarium just opened a new exhibit called Madagascar Journey, focusing on the wildlife and culture of the African island. There are cockroaches, birds, lemurs, and a wonderful toddler play space. I was told that the lemur show is not to be missed, but we missed it the day we went. Toddlers don’t always agree to the set schedule.
