Sometime in the middle of August I found myself posting about my Favorite Thing each day on Facebook. It wasn’t anything I planned on starting or anything I really thought through. One evening, in the quiet that comes after kids are in bed, I realized that I’d had a really clear favorite moment of the day. It wasn’t anything monumental. But I was walking in Downtown Charleston, and I happened to see a Sheperd Fairey mural that I’d only caught glances of before.
I even got the photo. And because of that, my day felt shiny. So I shared it on Facebook. What was your favorite thing today? I asked
Since then, I’ve been sharing my favorite, little things from each day on In The Next 30 Days’s Facebook Page. And people starting getting excited about it. They were sharing their own favorites things. They were celebrating moments with me. And when I stopped for a couple of days to hang out with my family, people stopped me at preschool pick up to ask me what happened to the posts. It had become it’s own small, perfect thing.
It’s been only a few weeks, but I’ve already learned an important lesson from these posts: People want to celebrate good news.
People want to know the ones they love are doing happy things, having special moments, enjoying their lives. And my Favorite Thing Today Post is doing just that. It’s making people realize that there’s good, there’s happy, and there are perfect moments even in busy and seemingly bad days. Yesterday, I went to the grocery store alone. I photographed my father playing blocks on the floor with Max. There was a perfect sunset that made Julia glow golden.
Simple small moments matter big. And even the most quiet moment, if it makes you smile, should be celebrated.
So I’m inviting you to join me. Let’s balk at the Misery Loves Company mentality and instead spread the word that happiness should be celebrated, that the spotlight should be on the love.
I’m using the hashtag #TodaysFav to post my moment every day at 9 pm EST, so feel free to post your own favorite moment from your day as a reply there. It can be a photo or just a sentence. Or use the hashtag across social media or share on my Facebook page. I just might share your moments this month. So we all can be sharing in the good news and recognizing the little things that just might matter the most.
