Ahh, Folly Beach. Have you ever been? The lovely barrier island is just outside of Charleston, and it’s the closest beach to my house, which makes it mighty important. Each year, a little bit of Folly disappears into the ocean because of erosion. And every so often dramatic measures are taken to preserve the beach for locals and tourists. Beach renourishment projects take the sand from somewhere else-like the Folly River, far off shore, etc.-and put the sand directly on the island. As you might expect, the renourishment project is super expensive. To help offset the costs, the Town of Folly Beach established the annual Sea and Sand Festival, where we spent our morning.
The two-day festival includes vendors, music, a huge scavenger hunt, plus surfing and sand sculpture competitions, which were today. We missed the music and vendors going today instead of yesterday, but Jason was doing his own good deed by helping a friend move. We missed a lot of the fun, but the surfing was was cool to watch. We sat with our toes in the sand, enjoying the sunshine on a spring morning, thankful to have a beautiful beach in our backyard and thankful that we can help keep it that way.
(Due to a camera glitch, I don’t have pictures from this morning. I took these back in January when I visited the Folly Beach Fishing Pier.)
