Angel Oak

06/04/12

Rumor has it that the Angel Oak is the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River.

And while it may sound silly to plan an afternoon around a single tree, I think the Angel Oak is not to be missed. To give you an idea of its enormity, according to the City of Charleston’s web site, the circumference of this tree is 25 1/2 feet around, and the branches span 17,000 square feet!

The Angel Oak is located about 15 minutes outside of downtown on Johns Island where it’s grown for an estimated 300 to 400 years. But what is so beautiful about this tree is the way the branches swoop and dip and tangle. Some rest of on the ground, some are supported with man-made braces to keep the tree healthy and thriving. But the gnarled bark and limbs are so amazingly perfect.
