Shelter Dog Day 1

11/01/13

30-Days-Shelter-Dog-1

I’d like you to meet Molly.

Sweet face, right? She is kind of dog you just want to hug. Do you know that kind of dog? That’s Molly. And she is the newest member of my family. Lucky, lucky me.

Molly has been my dog for exactly one month today. We adopted her through our local no-kill shelter Pet Helpers, but she’d been living with an amazing foster family for seven months. And although I’d like to change whatever past she’s had that made her petrified of loud noises or whatever it is that makes her jump in my lap while I’m working at the computer, I can’t. All I can do is love her and take the best care of her that I can. So that’s the plan.

But here’s the thing. I’ve never adopted an adult dog before. I’ve taught puppies not to chew shoes and go outside for the potty. And I’ve taught little pups to sit, shake, and roll over. But I’ve never started with a dog who already has some habits in place and her mind kind of made up. There’s a lot about Molly that I don’t know, a lot of personality that she’s showing me more of every day. We have a lot of learning to do together.

So for these 30 Days, I’m working with my shelter dog. I want to get to know her better, find out what she likes or doesn’t like, work with her on her anxiety and help her with a few manners (especially when she meets other dogs.) I’m taking this opportunity to focus on Molly, so that she can be assured that this is her home, that we love her so, and that we can give her what she needs. If I can do that, then I know she’ll be the best dog she can be. I’m excited about these 30 Days!

I absolutely love this! Our family expanded more than 4 years ago when we took in Amber, a redbone coonhound who had been found wondering the country with a broken leg. She is so essential to our family, but has brought with her many challenges. Those challenges are being overcome, but it has been a reminder of just how humans impact the emotional well-being of other creatures.

Molly is very luck to have you.

Thanks Jacki! It’s amazing isn’t it, the way animals respond and absorb the people around them, sometimes in a not-so- positive way. I love that you call Amber “essential to our family” because that is just what every pet owner should feel about their pet. I’m glad you found Amber!

I am so glad that Molly found you and your family. With your love I believe she will be fine by time. I thank you as a animal lover.

[…] I had so much fun Trick-or-Treating with my little SCUBA diver, and I couldn’t count how many times someone stopped either Max or me to say that his costume was so cool. They’d make him spin around in the street so they could oogle his tanks or point at his flippers. Then they wished us Happy Halloween, and sent us on our way. I’d declare it an official Pinterest Win. So I can’t wait to see where this month’s Adventures in Pinterest takes me. (Maybe somewhere puppy related?) […]
