Plan of Action for Our Backyard Makeover

There are some things you should know about me. First, I’m a visual person. I like to see things right in front of me rather than trying to imagine them into existence. Next up, I’m a planner. I like to know the what, when, where, and how well in advance. So, a visual plan of what we’re working on in the back yard makes me so so happy. And I feel just a little more organized.

The picture above shows the plants and layout of the back, right corner of my yard. It has potential to be a lovely spot with some nice shade. It’s close to the swing set too, so it can be a nice home base to hang out with the kids outside. I’m envisioning bubbles and sidewalk chalk. Plus we have a lovely fire pit that just needs a good spot to get used. Like I mentioned before, the space is a jumble of plants, begging for some TLC.

So here is the plan. By mapping out the plants, I was able to kind of get a sense of how to best organize the space. Jason and I have decided that a small patio would be perfect here. We are restricted by the weird shape and the fact the entire space has a brick border we’d rather not take out, but some pavers might work to create something of an outdoor room. My plan will also open up some space so that the most beautiful camellias and azaleas along the fence line, the ones currently hidden in the mess, can be seen and enjoyed. Down the length of the fence, I’ve simplified the plantings in order to clean up and out the area. This might leave some room for me to eventually plant tulips or other bulbs that I love and currently don’t have room for.

We have some extra considerations, like the patio material and the issue of privacy between us and our neighbor on the other side of those “severely pruned” trees, but the details can be ironed as we go. For now, it feels good to have an overall idea of what will happen and how things will turn out.

What do you think? Have I forgotten anything?
