I am convinced Magnolia Plantation is all about surprises. And between the gardens, house, Audubon swamp, and zoo, every inch provides one beautiful moment after another. If you check out the web site or take one of the tours, you’ll learn that the plantation was founded by the Drayton family in the 1600s. And now it’s the oldest public gardens in the country and an amazing place to visit, stroll, and pet the animals.
The zoo features all kinds of creatures native to the area, including albino racoons and squirrels. Many of the animals, deer, goats, turkeys, chickens, and rabbits, walk next to you and up to you inside the gates. I’d never petted a deer before or thought goats were cute, but the baby pygmy goat, Abby, was dear.
Pebbled garden pathways with azaleas taller than you wind and ramble over planted bridges, past amazing flowers, and along rivers and ponds. And there’s so much to see that it pays to get lost because what you might see when you’re not looking at the map is so worthwhile.
I didn’t make it to the award-winning slave quarters or to the Audubon Swamp. I didn’t see the house or all the gardens either. There is plenty to go back and see over and over, and in any season, I imagine Magnolia has something to offer.

It was truly amazing. I'd been to the Swamp before, but the grounds were much more impressive.
