Backyards are so much more intimate than their counterparts out front. Aren’t they? Hidden behind gates and fences, they’re tucked away, just waiting for an invitation and the perfect moment to be shared. I’m the kind of curious person who looks down driveways and walkways when we pull the wagon on evening walks. I want to see your backyard. (This has to be common practice, though, right? How else would Pinterest get to be so amazing?)
My big brother lives outside of Charlottesville, Virginia on a lovely bit of land and slopes around his straw bale house. I mentioned Reed during my 30 Days of Kindness, remember? His backyard includes a stream, a beech tree, some amazing gardens, lots of room for my super niece and nephew to play with their dog, and a yurt.
This month, Reed’s family and his backyard yurt are featured in C-Ville magazine’s Abode. It’s a unique thing, to build extra living space in your back yard that doesn’t have permanent walls and foundations. And that is certainly part of the appeal. Reed and his family use the yurt as guest and office space.
I’ve yet to stay in the yurt. But doesn’t it look wonderfully welcoming?
