I just got my first haircut in over a year. I know, amazing, right? And so I’ve been thinking a lot about my hair lately. And when I workout, I have all those fly-aways and short pieces that never ever stay back in my pony tail, no matter how long my uncut hair gets. So to fight the fly-aways, I made myself an exercise headband to wear while I work out. Cute, right?
Here’s what you’ll need.
Now for the fun part. Cut the hem off the bottom of your T-shirt with the scissors. And then cut 5, 1-inch sections of shirt. Cut straight across both seams so that each piece forms a circle. You can eye-ball 1-inch measurement, like I did, or you can use a ruler. The T-shirt is going to roll up as you cut, so precision is difficult and it isn’t essential. Trust me.
Cut each circle near a seam so that each piece is now a strip. Line up the ends, and tape the strips to your table top. This will make it easier to braid. I know braiding 5 strands might be a little intimidating, but think of it as weaving. Start on the left, and each strand goes over, under, over, under. When you finish the pattern, then start again with the strand on the far right. Over, under, over, under. Switch strands. Do it again.
When your braid is almost long enough to wrap around your head (about all the way around minus 1/2 an inch) stop braiding and trim the extra strands so there is roughly an inch hanging loose. Use this inch and the loose strands at the top of the braid to complete the circle. Match each end strand-for-strand. Tie each pair in a strong knot. I used a square knot. (Right over left and under. Left over right and under.) Make sure the knots are tight.
And your exercise headband is ready for your next workout!

This is such a neat idea! I haven’t tackled too many DIY projects lately, but this one actually seems simple enough for me to handle. 🙂
So so simple, and you can actually make a couple of headbands from 1 shirt. From the strips I cut, I made a headband for me and for my 3-year old. And there’s shirt left over. Plus, it’s totally machine washable, which is a MUST for workout gear. 🙂

This is such a great idea! Just made one….Not nearly as cute as yours but still cute!
So glad this was helpful! I’m sure yours was way cute too. I kind of want one in every color to wear more than just to work out in. 😉
