These 30 Days: Running

For my next challenge, I’m moving in a different direction, hopefully fast. I plan to complete 30 Days to running training in anticipation of the Reindeer Run 5K here in Charleston, SC on December 3.

I’m painfully out of shape. In the last three years, I’ve been pregnant twice. And I am not one of those pregnant women who jog into their third trimester or even walk every day. I am one of those pregnant women who need sleep and tacos apparently. My second pregnancy was smoother than my first in terms of weight gain, and I was forced to be more active because I had a toddler to chase. But Max had to be born via C-section because he was breech, so the recovery was more intense.
So here I am, six months later fighting the urge to fall back into the couch and re-watch season 4 of True Blood on my DVR.
Each year, I have friends who run the Reindeer Run. They typically dress in silly Christmas-themed costumes and enjoy a brisk morning on the Battery that ends up at a local brewery with free beer and bagels. I’ve walked the thing before. But when the walkers finish, all the free beer is gone, the complimentary oranges are now peels ground into the brick sidewalk, and the party is in full swing. So you arrive feeling like you’ve missed out on something really fun and go home cursing yourself because you didn’t train enough to run 3.1 measly miles.
But more than free beer and orange slices, I really need to shape up. I need to strengthen my body, increase my endurance, and get back into shape. Pregnancy should be my history rather than my excuse. I owe being healthy to my family and myself. So in 30 Days, I will have 4 weeks of training down and have an established running schedule.
Now, where are my running shoes?
