Get to Know Me Day 13 | Motivational

I’ve always liked the line from Hamelt, “To thine own self be true.” (Clueless flashbacks, anyone?) But this Robert Browning quote is even better because it assumes that myself is both imperial and plain at the same time. And of course, I know that I am.

“Best be yourself, imperial, plain, and true.”

The duality the important part of this advice. Yes, it’s important to remain true to who I am in my every day. But I believe that it’s even more important to recognize that I’m not consistent. I don’t react the same day after day. I don’t do the same things. I don’t love the same or dress the same or even laugh the same way every time. Some days I am imperial, strong, sure, straight-backed and in charge. And some days (like today) I am plain in my flip flops doing laundry and living a plain life. I cry and smile, sometimes at the same time.

So when I wake up in the morning, I am always Anna, and I have to follow my gut and my dreams and my intentions to be myself. How I do it-imperially or plainly-that’s not what’s important. What is important is that I do it in my own way. That’s where the trueness shines through.

Robert Browning gets it, and I’m starting to get it too.

Tell me, do you feel more imperial or plain today? What about most days?
