CSA Summary | 3

So last week I told you I was excited about a green onion in my CSA, but you know what? It was really green garlic. Thanks to Babs at Ambrose Farm who sends an e-mail every week about what to expect in my bag. She cleared it up, and apparently I wasn’t the only one who was confused by the “small onion” in their share. So Yay! for garlic. Also new this week are peas, bok choy, and some kind of lettuce. (I’m not sure which kind, but I have sent an e-mail to ask Babs, and I will update you when I find out.) What a haul, huh?

This past week has been beet week in our house, to Jason’s delight (she says sarcastically). I’ve been boiling, roasting, pureeing, baking, and pickling according to recommendations from friends. Check back in a few days for the results. We’ve been happily surprised. I steamed the braising greens and arugula to go alongside some barbeque pork last weekend, we’ve had omelets for dinners, lots of kale chips (so good and still a favorite), and plenty of salad. I admit we didn’t get to the Swiss chard quite quickly enough, and the turnips are still in the crisper. But I have a glazed turnip recipe I’m eager to try, and I’ll let you know how it goes.

I would have thought that green garlic was a leek, so she stumped us both.

Chard, chard… hmmm. Nothing springs to mind. Wilted chard tossed with goat cheese, tomatoes, and over the top of quinoa?

(Which, if you haven't discovered yet, is a yummy and WAY healthier alternative to rice. Try Costo/Sam's, otherwise it's freaking expensive in the little bitty store boxes.)

Your chard idea sounds yummy. I was thinking risotto, but quinoa would be healthier for sure. I need to rejoin Costco. I think I have a list of things that I could buy there to make it worthwhile.

Are you back to the world of Internet connection? I sure hope so!

It kind of does, doesn't it. (And I'm not afraid to tell you that I had to Google Boston lettuce.) I actually woke up to an e-mail from Babs at Ambrose this morning: “It is Summer Crisp Lettuce. It's a pleasant surprise-something not planned but ready.”

I've never heard of Summer Crisp, but I'm sure it will be good.

      Thanks for reading!
